I like my movies heavy on the acting and lite on the special effects.
Iron Man 3 isn't one of these movies.
My daughter invited me to go with her to see last night's opening (Thursday, May 2) in 3D at the mall theater, and since I don't go to movies very often — especially on opening night when the theater's packed — this was something special to be one of the first to people to see Iron Man 3.
Everybody (except me) seemed to know the story before entering the theater.
Briefly, I found out that Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) thinks he's fighting the villain named Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) with the aid of his wife Pepper Pots (Gwyneth Paltrow), Colonel Rhodes (Don Cheadle), and a boy named Harley (Ty Simpkins). But it's not really the Mandarin they're fighting, but rather the villanous Aldrich Killan (Guy Pearce) who uses the Mandarin to divert the public's attention.
Of course, there are other villains that appear and then disappear, such as Brandt (Stephanie Szostak), and some others whose names I don't know.
So, if you're a fan of Super Hero-type things, what's not to like about Iron Man 3?
Nothing, I'd think, but I'm not a fan of Super Hero comics, so when I attend a movie I want to be entertained and see some real acting, memorable scenes and a plot I can easily understand.
I didn't see much of any of these. The plot I suppose is my fault since I didn't see Iron Man 1 and 2, so some of what was going on didn't make sense.
However, there was a constant barrage of special effects which I didn't like because it leads to, in my opinion, a lack of effort on the part of the writers to create a strong script and a lack of effort on the part of the actors to try for strong performances.
What did my daughter think? She had mixed feelings about this one because as she explained, it deviated greatly from the first two movies.
Imdb.com rates Iron Man 3 at 7.9 out of 10. I'd rate it "average" because, frankly, I think it's a lame movie, too violent for my taste, and an expensive way to spend 2-plus hours, not counting the endless trailers which themselves were violent.
